Backstage Buzz: Abigail’s Party Begins

Today marks an exciting step in our journey towards November’s production of Abigail’s Party. The Spotlight Theatre backstage team is gathering for the very first time to shape the look, sound, and feel of the show. From lighting plots and costume rails to the all-important props table (yes, cheese and pineapple sticks will feature!), the creative energy is building.

At the same time, Abigail’s Party is back in the spotlight beyond our stage. As The Guardian reported this week, Channel 5 is reviving the legendary BBC series Play for Today, which first brought Mike Leigh’s play to TV audiences in 1977. That famous broadcast turned a razor-sharp comedy of suburban life into a national talking point, and cemented its place as a modern classic.

It feels fitting that as the series finds new life on screen, we’re bringing the play to life again here in France. Leigh’s comedy of manners: sharp, satirical, and painfully funny, remains just as relatable today as it was nearly fifty years ago.
